Angitis Gorge

Angitis Gorge

Set out an amazing journey via the natural beauty tucked away in the heart of Greece: Angitis Gorge. Formed by the Angitis River, the biggest tributary of the Strimonas River, this breathtaking gorge spans around 75 kilometers and presents a special fusion of historical importance and tough beauty.

Where the road starts: Simvoli Village and the source of the Angitis River

The Angitis River starts close to the charming town of Simvoli, where merging springs create its meandering path. From here, the river sculpts the stunning Angitis Gorge out of a maze of tall vertical rocks. For both adventure enthusiasts and environmentalists, this natural wonder—also called “Petra Strait” or “Dioriga— offers an amazing encounter.

Discovering the Gorge: from the Old Bridge to Alistrati Cave

The path of the Angitis Gorge finishes at the ancient Old Bridge next to the Angistas Railway Station, after passing the well-known tourist spot, Alistrati Cave. Visitors may quickly reach the gorge from the railway line; the main entry is in Simvoli settlement.

Old echoes: historical significance and rock paintings

The Angitis Gorge has historical riches beyond its natural beauty. The walls of the gorge show ancient rock paintings illustrating camels, animals, horsemen with spears, and abstract designs, therefore providing windows into the rich past of the area.
